Cape Town, South Africa
Table Mountain, the flat-topped mountain overlooking Cape Town, is a sight that stuns most visitors. It's a plateau some two miles long surrounded by steep cliffs and flanked by Lion's Head to the west and Devil's Peak to the east. The mountain forms part of the Table Mountain National Park.
The name was given by Portuguese explorer Antonio de Saldanha who in 1503 was the first European to land in Table Bay. You can still make out the cross he carved in Lion's Head.
Other than enjoying the magnificent views from the top, you can partake in a range of outdoor activities including hiking, rock climbing and caving. The top of the mountain features a self-service restaurant and the Cableway Cocktail Bar offering drinks with delightful sunset views.
You can ascend the mountain on foot or via cable car. Originally built in 1929, a new cableway was opened in 1997. Cars depart every 15 minutes from the lower station on Tafelberg Road between 8 and 8:30am until between 6 and 9pm. To find surrounding hotels near Table Mountain, see the links below.
