Somerset West Guide

Nestled at the foot of the Helderberg Mountains, about 28 miles from Cape Town, the scenic suburb of Somerset West provides an ideal base for exploring the region or a peaceful break from the bustle of the city. As Somerset West is more of a residential area, accommodation options are more limited than in the city centre, but the vast open spaces allow even budget hotels to offer visitors gardens and outdoor terraces.

Top Things in Somerset West

The beautiful natural scenery is the main reason to visit or stay in Somerset West, including the Helderberg Nature Reserve, home to many native South African species and ideal for walking.

Pardevlei Lake just outside the town is a pleasant spot for a stroll or you can take a trip to one of the nearby vineyards.

The Vergeglen estate is always a popular destination for tourists and is one of the best in the country.

Somerset West Hotels

Somerset West accommodation prides itself on offering peace, quiet and comfort to guests. Country hotels are always a popular option, while cheap hotels in Somerset West often provide much more space, both inside and out, than their city centre counterparts. Although most of the area is residential, there are still plenty of hotel rooms in the area thanks to the presence of the nearby Helderberg Mountains.

Kids and Families in West Somerset

Families enjoy staying in Somerset West as there is so much more space for kids to run around and have fun than in the city centre of Cape Town. Young ones can burn off their energy exploring the Helderberg Nature Reserve while the town's Somerset Mall is home to a cinema, bowling alley and family-friendly restaurants. Children over 12 can even join their parents on a tour at the Vergeglen vineyard.
