Johannesburg, Gauteng, South Africa
Gold Reef City is a complex made up of a theme park, casino, conference centre and hotel. The theme park is built around the No 14 shaft of Crown Mines that closed in 1971 and gives enjoyable insights into Johannesburg's gold rush past.
Among the attractions are scary rides and a Victorian fun fair. There are also buildings modelled on the late 18th century including a bank, pub and newspaper office. You can also visit fully furnished miner's houses with original furniture and view displays of antique clothing and children's toys.
To experience a gold mine, the intrepid visitor can descend 220 metres down a mine shaft, and watch various gold-related activities including a pouring gold into barrels and a performance of the gumboot dancing that was a favourite of the miners.
Other than various eateries, Gold Reef City offers the Gold Reef City Arts & Crafts Centre and a craft/souvenir shop. Gold Reef City's Casino is open 24 hours a day. Gold Reef City also contains the Apartheid Museum. To find surrounding hotels near Gold Reef City, see the links below.
