Oudtshoorn Guide

The Western Cape province of South Africa, crowned by the city of Cape Town, is an area that offers everything that visitors could ask from a business trip or holiday. With a beautiful coastline, vibrant business district in its main city, and rich soil producing excellent vintages, everything is within reach here. Visitors can trek and enjoy water activities in the morning, go shopping in the afternoon, and end the day with great food and wine. The Garden Route is the area running between Heidelberg and Storms River. It is a great route to follow to see more of the country. Oudtshoorn, a suburban town on the Garden Route, still has many of the grand houses that were built by the ‘feather barons’ who made their money from the ostrich feathers which have been produced here since the late 19th century, and is a fascinating outpost of this diverse and scenic region.

Oudtshoorn hotels offer relaxed, affordable accommodation, with guesthouses and eco-friendly hotels, many of them suitable for families wanting great value accommodation and outstanding views of the dramatic local landscapes.

Top Oudtshoorn Attractions

In this region of outstanding wildlife and gorgeous scenery, the Cango Wildlife Ranch is a must-see. Its big cats include cheetahs and tigers, and funds go towards the Cheetah Conservation Foundation. Pygmy hippos and alligators are also on show here.

Try the Safari Ostrich Show Farm, South Africa’s first ostrich show farm, featuring local breeds and even ostrich rides for children.

Oudtshoorn’s Cango Caves are also an impressive attraction, although not for the faint-hearted or claustrophobic, showcasing some impressive limestone formations in a cavernous maze of damp and humid tunnels.

Western Cape Oudtshoorn Hotels

With so many destinations along the Western Cape, it appeals to a wide range of different people, from couples that want some relaxation time, to groups and families that wish to have an energetic holiday, filled with activities. There are some impressive country manor style hotels with excellent Oudshoorn accommodation and restaurants dotted around the area, and great value three-star accommodation and comfort within the town itself. Even some of the cheap hotels in Oudtshoorn offer swimming pools and other good facilities as this is an inexpensive area that is perfect for anybody from families to backpackers to pensioners. Spa hotels are also available in this charming Garden Route town.

Cape Town is a popular nightlife spot and features ideal spot for a night out, including a wide range of popular bars, casinos and restaurants. Take your pick of traditional African cuisine and local Cape fare or a more eclectic and international mix in the diverse Western Cape.
