Stellenbosch Guide
Stellenbosch is a city of about 125,000, east of Cape Town, on the south-west coast of South Africa. Stellenbosch has wonderful natural beauty as well as many activities.
Seated in a shallow valley, the town enjoys views of the mountains and treed hills that surround it. Known as a centre of technology, it is also a fervent supporter of rugby, and nearly every resident supports a team, the local Maties Rugby Club being a favourite.
Visitors to Stellenbosch must taste some of the amazing wines that are produced in this region. Its unique location and soil combination produces distinct flavours and nearly everyone takes a few bottles home. A walk along Dorp Street will allow you to experience the city’s rich history, and you can finish the day at one of the many museums or galleries around town. Stellenbosch’s rich soils produce more than grapes, so stop by one of the many gardens, nurseries or flower and herb vendors whilst on holiday.
In a region that grows excellent wine, it should come as no surprise that Stellenbosch has a lively night scene. Whether you prefer blues, jazz, Latin, techno or rock for your evening music, a club or bar in Stellenbosch will have it. The biggest selection is near the city’s core, but venture a little further to the north of town for the Amazink show on Masithandane Street that offers a great South African experience of dance, dinner and song.
Since it is a metropolitan centre, accommodation at Stellenbosch ranges and will accommodate those who are backpacking or prefer five-star lodgings. All-inclusive schemes are available, as are self-catering holidays. Full-service hotels can meet your needs, and cheap hotels in Stellenbosch are available for those wishing to stretch their holiday budget. Try staying at a guesthouse where you can get acquainted with your host with a room overlooking a farm or vineyard.
