Vienna Guide – Spend Less, Do More

Vienna skylineYou've visited the centrepiece of Vienna, the marvellous St Stephen's Cathedral – come to think of it, you've frequented many a cathedral during your time in Austria, not to mention other European cities you've been to. A hunting lodge turned Hapsburg summer residence, the Schönbrunn Palace dazzles you with its ornate beauty, though, you remember as you think back, so did the many other royal abodes you had the privilege to visit. Finally, you couldn't very well visit such an important musical epicentre without seeing the House of Music, the home of Mozart, Beethoven, Mahler, Haydn and Strauss, back in the day. For those wanting a different experience of Vienna, the city has so much more to offer than what meets the eye! Follow us!

Coffee lover or not...

The experience of going to a Viennese coffee house runs deeper than just the coffee. On the UNESCO list of place offering intangible cultural heritage, the Viennese coffee culture is a must-do while in town. Try Café Sperl or Kleines Café and soak up the charm. Another great pastime while you enjoy your cup of Joe is to people watch – look out for locals going back and forth their business. Imagine them sitting where you are now with their morning coffee.

When at Schönbrunn, don't stop with the castle!

Go for a walk or run in the gardens in the early morning or late evening. After the crowds have departed, the grounds of the palace are strikingly beautiful and peaceful – you and nature as you saunter through the gardens and breathe in the damp grass...and wait, what is that animal smell? Have faith in your sense of smell, for it would be correct. There’s also a zoo – the Tiergarten Schönbrunn – open 365 days a year from 9am onwards. Established circa 1752, it takes the title of the oldest zoo in the world. Not only that, it is classed as a scientifically administered zoo, aiming to play a part in global conservation of species and habitats. The zoo is also one of the rare places in the world you'll see giant pandas outside of China. Not bad for just another touristy palace huh?

Instead of Naschmarkt...

Michaelerplatz viennaWhy not give Brunnenmarkt a chance? A little bit of novelty trivia – there is no street market in Europe longer than the aforementioned. I know you're thinking, oh no, lots of walking must be involved, but lighten up! There are plenty of restaurants in the area and they’re both stylish and cultural. What's not to like?

Not in the mood for dining out? No problem – pick up some baked goods, cheese, meat, seafood and herbs! You're guaranteed a successful evening in the kitchen, working with only the freshest ingredients that Vienna has to offer. Try making some local favourites Eitrige (spicy sausage and cheese) that can usually also be picked up from streets side stalls around town (if your home-made meal doesn't turn out as expected, this is insurance). Yep, we've got you covered!

You've got a great bargain on your accommodation...

So you got a little wiggle room now! Splash out a little and see a concert at the Vienna State Opera. Without a shadow of the doubt, opera houses do not get better than this – this is definitely world class. Or even better, if it's ball season, put on your dancing shoes and fulfil your dreams of dancing the waltz at one of the city’s many renowned balls.

Why not hire a car are travel to Hallstatt Village – a UNESCO World Heritage town? Like the sound of a breathtaking historical alpine village? We will not neglect to mention that it is also lakeside. Make sure to see the colors of the Market Square, the Bone House and the nearby salt mine (over 7,000 year old, the oldest in the world, this part of the world sure takes out many of them 'oldest it the world' awards!). Did someone say ice caves? Way above Hallstatt on Dachstein Mountain, you will find the Dachstein Ice Caves and 5 Fingers Lookout for the most spectacular views. Frozen waterfalls much? Amazing.
